40 hours a week and 261 days a year

JOB TITLE : Garage Mechanic

TYPE OF POSITION : Classified

REPORTS TO : Transportation Director

POSITION PURPOSE : Repairs and overhauls school vehicles to include buses, trucks and other automotive vehicles by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Examines vehicle and discusses with the Transportation Director, other garage mechanics, garage mechanic helpers, principal or assistant principal, or the vehicle operator the nature and the extent of damage or malfunction. Plans work procedure using charts, technical manuals and prior experience.
  • Raises vehicle with jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.
  • Removes unit such as engine, transmission or differential using wrenches or hoist.
  • Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and thickness gauges.
  • Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves and bearings using mechanic’s hand tools.
  • Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters and pumps.
  • Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks, using lathes, shapers, drill presses and welding equipment. Prewires ignition system, lights and instrument panel.
  • Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers and solders leaks in radiator.
  • Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlight, installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, cameras and windshield wipers.
  • Maintains vehicle as such to pass annual State Police inspection.
  • Assist Transportation Directory in purchasing auto equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Develops a routine schedule of service for buses and other vehicles used by the school corporation.
  • Maintains bus garage and wash bay so it is neat, orderly and a safe working environment.
  • Help maintain computer files on bus service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervise garage mechanic helper, train and assigns work.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • High School diploma.
  • Required CDL.
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school and/or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to plan and organize; good work habits.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations requiring decision-making.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to safely operate all garage equipment and tools.
  • Other qualifications that the School Board may require.

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds; and occasionally lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work in the outside weather conditions.
